Students develop natural pesticide to safeguard animal health

muscat: In a breakthrough for animal welfare, a student-led initiative at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Musannah, South Al Batinah Governorate, has engineered a solution to combat insect infestations harming animals.

Protex, a student company, has developed a natural pesticide to eradicate fleas and insects that commonly afflict animals. The innovation addresses a pressing concern in the market, where existing chemical-based solutions pose risks to both animals and the environment.

Saeed bin Hamad Al Shafei, Executive Director of Protex, highlighted the team’s dedication to crafting a safe and sustainable alternative to traditional pesticides.

Al Shafei said that the product, which has undergone rigorous testing in internationally accredited laboratories, outperforms its chemical counterparts in effectiveness while ensuring animal safety. Omar bin Juma Al Jahdhami, a quality control technician at Protex, underscored the meticulous manufacturing process, currently underway at the university’s facilities in Mussanah. Al Jahdhami noted the imminent issuance of certificates of conformity from regulatory authorities, marking a crucial milestone before the product’s market debut.

Abdul Aziz bin Mahmoud Al Abri, a Protex member, shared insights into the company’s journey, which began with eight students pooling their diverse expertise on 3 October, 2023.
